UNDERSTANDING ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY

Take one weekend or all three! Prior knowledge is not necessary to attend these weekends! Great for yoga students who want to know more about the body mechanics!

If your goal is to create a healthy body that can sustainably practice yoga for the rest of your life, this basic understanding of human anatomy is important.  It allows you to practice safely while being confident that the poses you are doing benefit your body.  The knowledge you learn will help you immensely in your practice of yoga!

Yoga Alliance CEU: Total 22 hours Anatomy & Physiology
Session per Weekend $195, Per Day $99  (You do not have to know anatomy to take these sessions!  Great for yoga students, yoga instructors, bodywork and massage therapists, health care in gerontology, and those who want to know more about the body.)

Using the descriptive tools of modern kinesiology, we learn to look past the surface of the body and to see Yoga poses as movements of the skeleton.  Emphasis is on identifying which joints are involved, determining ranges of motion and selecting alternatives.  Our bodies are complex, but a few anatomical principles, properly understood, make clear how a student performs a Yoga pose.  

Instructor, Alex Luz is a professor at Spartanburg Community College.  His undergraduate studies include biology and pre-med and he continues his studies in osteopathic medicine.

Take 1 or all 3 Sessions!

Session I: Saturday/Sunday, June
Introduction to the Human Body, Cells, Tissues, and the Respiratory System

Session II: Saturday/Sunday, July
Skeletal System, Appendicular and Axial Divisions

Session III: Saturday/Sunday, August
Nervous System and Muscular System

These sessions are designed to provide you with knowledge about the body in yoga poses, including terminology used in the study of anatomy and physiology, an overview of cell structure and function, tissue types and distribution within the body.  A more detailed discussion will focus on the parts and functioning of the respiratory, skeletal, nervous and muscular systems of the human body.  Anatomical models will be used to help visualize body parts.

Ojo Caliente, located in the hills of New Mexico, offers an award-winning spa with 5 natural thermal pools to soak and relax body and mind.  From the deep red earth and cerulean blue sky to its lovingly preserved history and heritage, Ojo Caliente has been a source of healing for hundreds of years.  Relax and rejuvenate while improving mental focus, vitality and immunity as you reconnect with yourself through yoga, hiking, soaks in the thermal pools and informative talks with like-minded people.

Your weekend includes:

  • Morning Yoga and Meditation Sessions.

  • Saturday evening Ayurvedic meal.

  • Hiking in the plateaus of the Tewa Indians.

9:45 – Hike/Walk to the Tewa Indian Preserve 

12:30 to 4:30 – Free time – lunch, sleep, spa, soak, journal, personal session, read, walk, do nothing

Kristi will be giving personal ½ hour consultations.  If you are interested in taking your life plan to the next phase, whether it is food habits, physical potential, mental relief or life’s goals, let Kristi be your guide to moving forward.  30 minutes for $45.  A sign-up sheet will be available.

Retreat Fee:  $699 includes accommodations, yoga and hiking, time in the thermal pools and a healthy Saturday evening Ayurvedic meal.  The Artesian Restaurant and Wine Bar serves a variety of delicious global cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Prior to arrival, we will stop at Whole Foods in Santa Fe for any food items you need for lunch and snacks you can prepare in our full sized, fully equipped kitchen in the houses.
